Velvet Ant - Pseudomethoca

Velvet Ant - Pseudomethoca
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
April 1, 2006
Size: around 10 mm
Much smaller than the last velvet ant I found.

Moved from Velvet Ants.

Pseudomethoca sp. Female
I'm almost certain this in the genus Pseudomethoca. The mesosoma is narrowed posteriorly (instead of Timulla which is generally narrowed medially, rectangular in shape). The eyes here look slightly ovate but not strongly enough to be Timulla.

Your new to me waspgreorge. do you collect hymenoptera, or do you just study them?

Both
I study and collect, primarily eusocial wasps (Mischocyttarus, Polistes) and many solitary genera.

I'm fairly new to Mutillids though, I've been learning to ID diurnal genera recently. I've also been trying to do sex and host associations in the field.

I cleaned up the Mutillid section as well (most according to confirmed IDs by you and Kevin), hopefully it is a bit easier to navigate.

I love mutillids, infact toni
I love mutillids, infact tonight I'm going to a collecting spot to look for some rare nocturnal female mutillidae.
Thanks for cleaning up the mutillidae section, it needed it soooo badly. The guide was definitely missing a lot of the confirmed IDs'.

Moved from Dasymutilla.

this is actually a species of
this is actually a species of timulla or pseudomethoca but, it depends on the eye shap which I can't see here.
