Sawfly Ovipositor - Dolerus nitens - female

Sawfly Ovipositor - Dolerus nitens - Female
DuPage County, Illinois, USA
April 2, 2006
Size: 10mm
Ever since I first discovered sawflies (4 years ago, when I photographed D. nitens and D. unicolor one raw spring day), I've wondered what this "saw-like" ovipositor looked like. This year, I decided to get it on film, and I did - sort of. It's really really tough to see what the heck is going on, and I can't tell when or where the egg(s?) are going.

Saw flies
Thank you so very much. I never knew why they are called sawflies.

As an aside, if you know anyone who can raise these things, please, sendme their contact information. I've been trying to raise about 4 species of sawflies for a couple of years and have only had 2 individuals emerge. I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

You're welcome. I'm glad you found my photo useful.

I looked at your site on insect life cycles, and I would be happy to supply images if you wish. You can find my site at:
