Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle -
Harmonia axyridis
Radford, Virginia, USA
October 24, 2010
There are 18 spots in all - so is this an eighteen-spotted lady beetle? She was walking really fast up the tree trunk in the afternoon sun!

This photo really shows the "square-shouldered" attribute of
H. axyridis
, which I find most useful for identification regardless of color, pattern, or pronotum. I'd like to keep this photo even though we have so many of the species, because it's a useful reference.

Thanks, Abigale...
Thank you very much, Abigale. Your explanation has once again been very helpful and has added to my knowledge of H.axyridis. You gave me a lesson in spot counting when I sent a seven-spotted one for ID recently. I really appreciate all of your help.
I am very glad that the lively little critter just happened to turn its square shoulder to the camera that caught it in a reasonably sharp image!
I'm a retired physical science teacher who has been using my cam to discover the wonders of life science. I began photographing and identifying flora and fauna in our 54 acre Wildwood Park in Radford, Va. about 18 months ago with the goal of having an album of prints with names and dates for each entry. I now have six albums and a greater appreciation for nature and several mentors who have provided lots of encouragement and patient help. BugGuide has been a delightful resource. BTW - Try Googling Wildwood Park, Radford VA and take a look at what's there. The webmaster, Gary Cote who is a professor of biology at RU, has been one of my mentors. I think that you will be impressed with his work.

Harmonia axyridis - Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle
This species can have anywhere from zero to 19 spots - I think the "multi-patterned" lady beetle might be a more appropriate name sometimes!
