Young Masked Hunter - Reduvius personatus Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA April 3, 2006 Size: 13 mm
Found under thick loose bark of large, decayed, ready-to-topple deciduous snag. Apparently only the nymphs are sticky dirtballs. With their final molt they apparently lose their stickiness, which might otherwise present an areodynamic liability when they try out their new wings.
I am so accustomed to cleaning the dirt and specks off my beetle images with the PhotoShop clone-stamping tool that it was hard to let this one go as is ;-)
