Water Boatman? -
Acilius mediatus
Barkhamsted, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA
April 5, 2006
Size: close to .5 inches
Could this be an early form of the Water Boatman? Found in man-made frog pond while cleaning. Thanks.

looks like Acilius mediatus
Acilius mediatus, note the nice "M" on the head between the eyes.
not included in Dillon, but described in J Epler's "ID Manual for the Water Beetles of Florida", downloaded from Beetles.pdf at
http://www.floridadep.org/labs/cgi-bin/sbio/keys.asp#keys
(I thought I got this ref from BugGuide, but can't seem to find it)

Nice shot
Nice reflection of yourself there. It's like a clean, entomological version of that tea kettle from ebay...

Diving Beetle (Dytiscidae) - Adult
Maybe you'll find the genus in the Guide's page devoted to this large group of predacious aquatic beetles (Coleoptera).
Water Boatmen (Corixidae) are true Bugs (Heteroptera). Among many other differences, most of them have a more slender outline.

Predacious Diving Beetle
Thanks, Tony and Richard. I never looked under Beetles because I was sure it was a true bug. That little sucker gave me an adrenaline rush when I found it. Run for the camera!
