blue butterfly
I am just curious as to why it is called a red-spotted purple if he is blue with black and white markings.
Thanks

Red Spotted Purple
Did you see it with its wings folded together? It has red spots on the hindwing underside, thus the "red spotted" part of the name. Some faint red spots can sometimes be seen on the tips of the forewing, too. The blue is somewhat iridescent and can appear purple in some lighting. And remember that butterflies often fade and wear quickly, so colors may not appear exactly as they show up in the field guides.
