Numbers
7 species in our area(1)(2):
  Physoconops (Pachyconops) brachyrhynchus (Macquart) 1843
  Physoconops (Pachyconops) bulbirostris (Loew) 1853
  Physoconops (Pachyconops) excisus (Weidemann) 1830
  Physoconops (Pachyconops) floridanus Camras 1955
  Physoconops (Pachyconops) gracilis (Williston) 1885
  Physoconops (Pachyconops) townsendi Camras 1955
  Physoconops (Pachyconops) weemsi Camras(2) 2007
Identification
From pg. 161 of Camras (1955) and the MND(3), the subgenus Pachyconops is distinguished by:
    1) 3rd antennal segment relatively slender, more than 2/3 the length of the 2nd antennal segment;
    2) the triangular polished space on the posterior margin of the eye is very small or absent;
    3) dark pattern in posterior cell, if present, relatively wide.
Similar to the subgenus Physoconops, but having the front shorter than wide, and having antennal segment 3 about equal to segment 2. The triangular polished space on the posterior margin of the eye is very small or absent.
Range
From (1):
  P. brachyrhynchus: WY to MA, s. to NM and FL
  P. bulbirostris: IN to NJ, s. to TX and FL
  P. excisus: CO to NY, s. to OK and FL
  P. floridanus: FL, NC (and NJ(2))
  P. gracilis: CA to CO, s. to TX and Mexico
  P. townsendi: CA, AZ, NM, TX
  P. weemsi(2): FL, GA
