Mayfly molt, Hexagenia? - Hexagenia

Mayfly molt, Hexagenia? - Hexagenia
Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina, USA
August 14, 2007
Size: 1.2 in, nose-tip of abd.
I found this insect on a gas pump one night and brought it home.
It was getting ready to molt. In a few hours it tried to shed its skin, but unfortunately could not complete the task, and died
as you see it in the second picture. Can anyone tell me why this
happened?
