Fly with white bands and long frong leg - Simulium - female

Fly with white bands and long frong leg - Simulium - Female
Wilton, Inland Barrens, Saratoga County, New York, USA
November 11, 2010
Size: .25 inch
Neat little fly, that had a weird gate, and white bands on legs. ID? Thank you! K

Probably subgenus Simulium
This is probably subgenus Simulium, based on the plain thorax, banded legs, and lack of gold scales typical of Eusimulium.

Moved
Moved from ID Request. Within the family contrasting white tibiae usually mean Simulium.

Was it really taken yesterday? A bit out of season.

Maybe
Simuliidae (Black Flies)

Date was 11/12/10 not 11/11 errata
Actually, taken today, just a bit ago- I have the date wrong then.

Well, if it is a black fly then yes. But I have been bitten by black flies up here this time of year- and no one believes me. I have seen the hump. Not sure- but maybe the latter animals are a different species? I saw many of these out today in 59 degree weather.

Many species
There are 255 species of black flies known from North America (north of Mexico) as of the last review of the family.(1) Most of the mammal-biting species fly in the spring. Most of the rest fly in early summer. I noticed I also have a photo of one from November.
