Wolf Spider - Hogna carolinensis - female

Wolf Spider - Hogna carolinensis - Female
Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
July 29, 2010
Size: 3cm BL (possibly larger)
This individual seemed to hunt in the same spot throughout the summer and I frequently found it preying on crickets, cockroaches and beetles. From checking photos and descriptions in the guide, I think it may be a Hogna species...maybe carolinensis or coloradensis.

Any help with an ID is appreciated.

Moved
Moved from Wolf Spiders.
I went with H. carolinensis because from what I know of H. coloradensis the markings on the carapace have a slightly different look to them with prominent dark triangular patches behind the eyes:

There is some confusion with some of the H. carolinensis here though, some have orange ventrals as opposed to black ... dorsally they're indistinguishable. We don't yet know if they're a different species or a variation.

Thanks for your input, R.J. and Heidi :)

I agree...
...beautiful pictures, and I would agree with Hogna, although I'm nowhere close to an expert. :-) It looks like a ventral shot would help distinguish between the two species you listed.

I don't know which wolf spide
I don't know which wolf spider this is but want to commend you on these beautiful photos!
