Beetle in Las Vegas, Nevada - Derobrachus hovorei - male

Beetle in Las Vegas, Nevada - Derobrachus hovorei - Male
Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada, USA
July 28, 2005
He was flying around after dark on a hot July night here in Las Vegas. He was at the parking garage area of the hospital when he literally flew into me. I got the shot of him crawling before he flew away again. Would love to know what kind of beetle he was.

Moved
Moved from Derobrachus.

Las vegas, NV
I found 2 on 05, and 2 more in 07.
One was female, she was much bigger than that.
I am wondering where they are coming from.
Palm trees? I have 2 canary palms, and 1 mexican fan palm.
All in great shape

Root Borer
This is one of the largest members of the Longhorned Beetle family. They are in the subfamily Prioninae and are called Tooth-Necked Longhorns or Root Borers.

I'm not familiar with Nevada insect life so I hesitate to say more precisely. I want to say it is in genus Prionus but I know that west has some other similar and reasonably common beetles in Prioninae.

Thanks
Thanks so much, he was an interesting fellow and being new to Nevada, I had no clue what he was (grew up in FL so the size didn't shock me too much).

I look forward to finding some more "bugs" to share!

Correct, sorta:-)
This is a palo verde root borer, Derobrachus geminatus, and a male. Females tend to be even bigger, heavier-bodied with more slender antennae. These hulking insects begin flying at dusk and are often attracted to lights. Yet another reason to wear a helmet while motorcycle riding:-)
