Blowin' in the wind - Procecidochares

Blowin' in the wind - Procecidochares
Riley Wilderness Park, Coto De Caza, Orange County, California, USA
April 8, 2006
Size: about 3mm
Conditions were very windy. Fly didn't attempt to move, and I was very close. It would rotate on the blade of grass, but wouldn't move to the other side. Interesting wings, yes?

Three cheers for Martin! Rah! Rah! Rah!
What progress you've made with those fruit flies. I shot a couple more this morning and plan to post soon. Way to go!

By the way, are the wings on this one "normal"? I've been told otherwise.

So much for my guess.
Thanks, Norm, for your definitive answer.

Female fly.
The tube-like ovipositor at the end of her abdomen identifies this as a female. Whether it is a fruit fly (family Tephritidae), or picture-winged fly (Ulidiidae) I am not sure:-)

Picture-winged, I'd now guess
Maybe it's not an educated guess, but from where this gal was and how she behaved, I'd say picture-winged. Fly did not startle easy and was on grass, as were most of the ulidiidae I saw online. (The fruit flies I've seen locally are quick to flee and typically on flowers.) Thanks again, Eric.
