Bombus vosnesenskii
San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California, USA
November 17, 2010
Size: 1 inch long, 1/2 inch wid
yellow head, yellow stripe on rear, had wings although it was walking on the deck,

Bombus vosnesenskii vs. caliginosus
I believe in Orange County is must be vosnesenskii. See comments

Correct, but...
There's also the similar black-faced Bombus californicus, which I'm not experienced enough to rule out from these somewhat oddly angled photos. A face shot would be telling.

not californicus
the yellow running down the face isn't found in californicus. I see these a lot, so they're pretty easy for me to recognize.
