Watched the insect dig sand out of this borrow for about 10 minutes.

At first i thought podium luc
At first i thought podium luctuosum, but no, he is right, it is a sphex nudus. You can faintly see the distinctive sphex thoracial pattern that all members of the genus sphex have.

I believe you are right, looking at all the other photos including the same burrowing behavior and even a very similar looking cover for the burrow.
