Purpuricenus axillaris - Purpuricenus paraxillaris - Male
7 km east of Paw Paw, 39.5224, -78.3641, Morgan County, West Virginia, USA
July 5, 2000
Size: 20 mm
Hovering about bucket of fermenting molasses in bright sunshine in dry upland oak-hickory forest clearing.

(Note: the one detail that I wish this image showed is the very thin, polished, midline, dorsal callus on the pronotum. It is there, and fairly prominent, but hard to see unless the downcast light comes in at just the perfect angle.)

Fermenting Molasses
See comments under Photo #47471 concerning the use of fermenting molasses.

This is likely...
Purpuricenus paraxillaris - similar to P. axillaris but larger, more robust, pronotal tubercles more strongly developed, elytral apices more distinctly dentate, and eltyral maculae red instead of orange.
