Dendroides canadensis (Latreille)
Yes, it is the larva of Dendroides canadensis (Latreille). Some insects/beetles are, of course, pretty choosy where the eggs are laid (tree species) - D. canadensis is not very tree specific, but larvae of the species are almost always found only on the upper face & sides of a felled tree - not on the undersurface - adjacent to the soil. That is the typical microhabotat of Dendroides concolor (Newman) and Neopyrochroa flabelllata (Fabricius).

Thanks.
Do beetles that live on dead logs (as larvae) tend to be choosy about what kind of tree bark they lay their eggs under?
