Sphaeroderma testaceum (F) - Sphaeroderma testaceum

Sphaeroderma testaceum (F) - Sphaeroderma testaceum
Quebec City, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada
August 13, 2008
Size: 3,7 mm
This is a first mention for North America! Well...almost! This Chrysomelidae doesn't appear on any North American list except may be in Nova Scotia, Canada, where it was mentioned for the first time in 2004. You won't find it in American Beetles! It is a first mention for the province of Quebec, and I found it during lunch hour, on a walk around the block where I work. It was on Thistle sp. I recognized right away its similarities with other insects of the Alticini tribe by the way it kept jumping around where I tried to catch it. This insect was identified for me by M.Claude Chantal of Varennes, Que and M.Laurent Lesage of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada of Ottawa. I thought you might enjoy having it on BG.

Oh my!
Even Canadians use a comma where us Yanks use a decimal point ;-) The whole world is against us!

Nice find BTW.

Sphaeroderma testaceum Fabricius
It is not maybe in Nova Scotia, but definitely. :-> The earliest specimen is from 1997 and the results were published in:
Majka, C.G. and LeSage, L. 2006. Introduced leaf beetles of the Maritime Provinces, 1: Sphaeroderma testaceum (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington 108: 243-247.
A PDF copy of this is available at: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/NHR/PDF/Spheroderma_PESW-2006.pdf
In Nova Scotia it now occurs over a substantial area and is found on Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense). It is very interesting to discover that it is now also in Quebec - an excellent find!

Thank you for the info concer
