Large ant-like insect - Ocypus olens

Large ant-like insect - Ocypus olens
Richmond, California, USA
December 14, 2010
Size: 1.25 inches / 30mm
I am hoping someone can identify this insect. It appears ant like to my untrained eye, only much larger. It was found on the floor of a building alone. I have lived around here for years and never seen anything like it.
Thanks for any help!
