Ground Beetle - Loricera pilicornis

Ground Beetle - Loricera pilicornis
Robert Frost Trail, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
April 14, 2006
Size: ~5 mm
Found among river stones along the bank of the Middlebury river. There were a couple of rows of dimples along the elytra.

Carabidae: Loricera pilicornis
This name popped into my mind when I saw the picture. One of the odd looking carabids - note the distinct setae on the antennae. Typically in floodplain areas along rivers.

Thanks Donald!
I hope more names pop into your mind as you peruse the other shots:)

I did notice the hairy antennea while adjusting the image, what are they specialized for?

Don't know
This is where the carabid expert would be handy to have on around.

They're used for "caging" springtails
is what Boris says.
