That
is one of the reasons for ID request. Eric, Don, myself or others who had a good idea of what species this spider is would have IDed it for you.

I don't try to place many of the insect images I submit, especially moths. 193 pages of images. I prefer to use ID Request and wait for someone to help me out.

If you had an idea this was a Phidippus, there are only 19 pages of images, and as mentioned using Browse narrows it down (to 5), so you probably would have found what you were looking for on pg. 3.

We don't think the problem
is the way you use the guide. Here it is more likely that there simply are too many salticids!! We do use the BROWSE feature a lot when we are trying to drill in on something. For example here we would click on the image of the spider in the picture guide to the left and then click the Taxonomy tab. One could then drill down through the choices till the family Salticidae appears on one of the lists. One difficulty with that process is that as BugGuide creates more and more categories above the family level it gets more and more difficult to know what to click to get where you want to go. The VIEW ALL tab is nice but it tends to show too much especially when you are that high up in the taxonomy. There has been discussion of implementing a VIEW MORE tab instead which will get you through those higher categories without opening up all the individual species.
Anyway, another alternative to drilling through taxonomy is to type salticidae or some piece of it ending in an asterisk, saltic*, into the search frame. This will return images and guide pages and comments etc. so you can jump to the Salticidae guide page quickly. Now the BROWSE button is nice. It will let you browse through images in the categories listed as the next level under Salticidae, in this case mostly subfamilies. When you find a subfamily you like, click on it and you can browse through images in the genera that lie in that subfamily, etc. The nice part about Browse is that you get a representative set of images to look through instead of having to look at every image in the guide as you do with the IMAGE tab.
The more you know about where you're going, the quicker you can get there. For example, you can search on Phidipp* and go right to the genus if you are fairly sure that's where you want to be.
But once again we would say the problem is likely not in your search technique but in the large and variable family of spiders you have here. Most of us just post and wait for Jeff Hollenbeck to tell us what we have!!

thanks
thanks john ,jeff and jane, again you have helped me alot, when i used the guide ive never hit browse yet i got thru every family and subfamily till i get to subspecies and i looked at everything that was0 there, then back to the farthest point i need to hit to follow the next class line -. what you have explained will take what took me 3 hours , down to maybe 30 min . ill let u know how my next search goes, got a new grasshopper pic yesterday, and a few butterflies today. thanks again guys.
