Syrphid
Hello Bill,
This is a syrphid which mimics a bumble bee. The species is Merodon equestris, you can find more pictures in the guide. This one is a male!

is here. Good shot, and good identification. I just saw one of these here in NC, but it was flighty and I could not get a photo. The orange color was very striking.

Patrick. You're right about them being flighty. Most of the time when they would land, I couldn't get closer than 3 feet from them. A long lens help out on this shot.
