A. confraterna and terminalis side by side - Acanthocephala

A. confraterna and terminalis side by side - Acanthocephala
Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
September 12, 2005
Size: 27 mm
A. confraternus is on the left and terminalis is on the right. I am constantly trying to key these out properly as they are common in my area. After doing some research, I hope that these series of photos will help. Notice the more slender abdomen of the confraternus and that the connexivum is not showing.

I believe you have a male and
I believe you have a male and a female pictured. The epithet of confraterna should really be placed under terminalis. The females of femorata and terminalis, however, are really hard to differentiate in many cases, but both males and females of femorata have a black spot on the ventral surface of the abdomen below the hind trochanter.

This a great comparison shot
- I'm trying to sort out our masses of Acanthocephala images, and this has been very helpful. Thanks!
