This species is nearly always easy to recognize by its silky pubescence. It has been recorded from Iowa as well.

There are 3 species recorded from Iowa: Helichus basalis, H. fastigiatus, and H. striatus.

 
hope Brady gives us a sp. name; imho, not striatus
although further ID may well require a well-lit closeup of the pronotal/elytral base

I may or may not have collected it. It will be a while before I am set up to look at last year's freezer insects. (I can hardly wait.)
