Found walking up a pine tree trunk. I know what this is, but I am completely flummoxed by what appears to be attached to its eye/antenna. I didn't notice it until I enlarged the image on the monitor and it can't be more than 1 mm in size.

It is an ant head.. They will bite and never let go, sometimes leaving their heads on other insects. I'm not sure what type of ant it is.. Maybe a Solenopsis invicta?

An ant who gave her all in defense of the colony. :)

Upon further review
I certainly cannot argue. Now that I look at it in that light, it definitely looks like a fire ant head. Thanks, guys!
