Excuse me
but this is Nematus ribesii , prepupa.
After the last molt, the larva loses black spots, but the yellow rings on the thoracic and 8th abdominal segments remain.

here is the moment of molting: https://www.dreamstime.com/gooseberry-caterpillar-nematus-ribesii-garden-pest-eats-leaves-green-gooseberries-gooseberry-caterpillar-nematus-image136341663

Tenthredinidae, Nematinae
Pristiphora appendiculata (Hartig). A rather common sawfly on currant and distinguished from the other currant-feeding species, Nematus ribesii by lacking black spots on the body. Widespread in North America, and probably an introduction from Europe long ago.

Lots of legs...
Hi Willy, I just read about sawfly larvae. I learned that they have more legs than other caterpillar-like creatures. In your photo I see three larger legs in the thorax/chest position, then many smaller legs, perhaps six more. And each leg we see on this side would have an opposite that we cannot see. So that's about 9 pairs of legs. And I have enough trouble managing just the two...

Sawfly Larva
It is definitely a Sawfly Larva and I would sure like to know which one. All I know for sure is, that it is not 'Nematus ribesii' even though it was found on a Currant bush.
I'm with you on the Legs part, I'm having problems with mine too, specially after a few Scotch's
Willy

Looks to be a sawfly larva instead
Do you know the plant it is on?
