Black and orange caterpillar - Estigmene acrea

Black and orange caterpillar - Estigmene acrea
Venice, Sarasota County, Florida, USA
April 20, 2006
Size: about 2"
Very confusing this one. Going through the guide I saw 3 that might be contenders. Gypsy Moth, Salt Marsh Moth and the Virginian Tiger Moth that Tom Murry posted

We'll see...
I went back out today and gathered a couple of these guys. Hopefully they will do their thing and we can see exactly what they are. Boy do I feel dumb! I had no idea or didn't think about it, that they go to the bathroom! Within and hour these eating machines have dropped a lot of frass.

Moving to tiger moths
pending further ID - let us know if you get an adult, Carla!

Thanks
I had to come south for a week to watch granddaughter. The day before I left, one of them just totally disappeared. I have (had) 3 in a 20 gal. aquarium. Some gravel on one side, some potting soil on the other. Yesterday in conversation on phone, husband says other 2 are gone. There is netting securely on top so nothing can get in or out. I'm thinking they went under the dirt or gravel to pupate?? He says there is a curled leaf on one of the branches. Can't wait to get home to check things out.

Dark with orange on sides
Mine doesn't have the yellow markings on the head as shown in Tom's image.

We'd put our money on
the Salt Marsh, Estigmene acrea. Your image is almost identical to the image and description in Wagner, page 464. Let's see what others with that book say.

Thanks you 2
I need to find this book, and many more.
