Wasp or beetle? - Creophilus maxillosus

Wasp or beetle? - Creophilus maxillosus
Derry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA
April 18, 2006
Size: an inch or so
Found this inside the house. Is it some kind of beetle or wasp? Is the larva related to the adult or completely different?

Staphylinidae: Creophilus maxillosus
The beetle (as others have indicated) is a rove beetle. They are predators on fly larvae in rotting materials, usually carrion. The larva to the right is a fly larva. I would suspect that you have a dead animal in the walls or attic of the house, and the fly larvae may be dispersing now because they are mature. The beetle is attracted to the odor.

Looks like a rove
The adult is a rove beetle, i'm not sure what the larva is.

Beetle
Its a beetle, family Staphylinidae, dont know about the larva
