Tiger moth larva - Lophocampa caryae

Tiger moth larva - Lophocampa caryae
Near Fancy Gap, Blue Ridge Parkway, Carroll County, Virginia, USA
September 2, 2007
Size: 3.5 cm
Is this Lophocampa caryae or L. tessellaris? (I see the taxonomy has been
changed from Halysidota.)
Found in grass beside Blue Ridge Parkway, elevation about
2900 feet.

Thank you
for moving these to the right location.
A very pretty bug, I think.

Vote for L. caryae
I don't see the black lashes that seem so prominent in all of the tessellaris images in the guide.

But then, I'm no lep expert--and I've been spectacularly wrong about caterpillars before--so wait to see if anyone else agrees. :)
