eating eachother - Harmonia axyridis
Collegedale, Hamilton County, Tennessee, USA
April 22, 2006
There were a ton of them, they looked like they were eating eachother.

Harmonia axyridis - Multicolored Asian Ladybird Beetle
- pupa on the left and larva on the right. Branched spines and orange stripes of the larva are used for ID. I don't know if they are known to be cannibalistic.

cannibalism in Harmonia axyridis
Hi: we had an unusually heavy "crop" of ladybirds two years ago, and hey are highly cannibalistic. I watched larva eating eggs, adults eating eggs, and larva eating pupa. At least under conditions where there are many of these ladybirds, adults and developing, cannibalism seems to be a very significant food source.
