Osmoderma emericola - Osmoderma eremicola

Osmoderma emericola - Osmoderma eremicola
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
April 23, 2006
Here are the opened pupal shells and dead pupae, the more wasted/decomposed of which were probably food to the parasitic tachinid flies that eclosed inside the rearing contained during the past month or so.

A pupal shell containing a pupa also contains the skin of its final molt as a larva, usually in a rumpled wad at one end of the shell. A shell containing a mature eclosed beetle also contains two shed skins, the second being the pupal skin.
