Dermestes IMG_4294 - Dermestes talpinus
Prospect Park, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA
April 18, 2010
Found on a dead raccoon. Closest thing I could find is Dermestes undulatus here which is Holarctic according to www.dermestidae.com but is not listed at nearctica.com. I noticed that Dermestes undulatus talpinus is listed as a synonym for D. talpinus at dermestidae.com.

BugGuide shows similar images under D. talpinus but I'm wondering how to know they are not undulatus. I'm also wondering about what the range of undulatus is and what it's relationship is to talpinus.

undulatus is indeed very similar from above
...but has less white on the abdominal venter; from what i can see on your lateral shot (4 rather than 3 speckles of white), this is our all-American talpinus

Moved from Beetles.
