Size: ~5/8"
The probiscus was noticible when it was hovering, I got lucky when it landed for awhile.

Just a hunch
Looks like a bee fly in the family Bombyliidae, perhaps Bombylius major:

An expert will have to confirm, though.

 
I'm not an expert, but
I second that conclusion. I also got lucky and caught one of these guys recently. They are awesome fliers, though.
