Size: approx. 1/4 inch
Is this what's called a Waltzing fly? Prochyliza sp.? Found it staking out territory on a dead opossum.

"Cheese skipper?"
I've never heard of a "waltzing fly", but this reminds me of one of the "skipper" flies in the family Piophilidae. This is an excellents shot, so identification should be relatively easy. Anyway, the family is named for the larvae, which can jump quite a distance by grasping their "tail" in their mouth and then suddenly releasing it. They generally breed in rancid fats.
