Heteroceridae > Heterocerus ? - Heterocerus mollinus

Heteroceridae > Heterocerus ? - Heterocerus mollinus
Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi, USA
May 11, 2010
Size: 5.0mm
Collected 3 at light trap. In the keys, everything past #6 sends one to the gonad
section, so I resorted to photo matching. Looked at Lap*sus, but it seems the light
patches are too large. Several of the Heter*ocerus photo's look similar, so will go
with that genus. Comments/corrections most welcome.

Lanternarius
I'd vote for Lanternarius (mollinus group) - post-meso coxal lines, no post-metacoxal lines, and >4.5mm, vs. Neoheterocerus (gnatho group) - "big" but no lines, or Heterocerus - "smaller" (undatus group and others).

Probably L. mollinus, but I'd be glad to hear from others.

Your other mud-lover looks like the same.

Mud-lover
Thank you Tim, I agree. The other one is an "impatient dupe" which
I have deleted. Do you have a key for these guys other than Am Btls?

keys
Keys for these are hard to come by (the whole little family is a bit of a mess!). For the NorthEast, there's one in Dillion and Arnett(1). I've also gotten a few articles published on the family over time (see the family info page). Dr. Miller seems to be putting things back together. But overall, I haven't been able to reliably key many of these. For me, it remains a bit of a guess.
