Pipevine Swallowtail - Battus philenor - female

Pipevine Swallowtail - Battus philenor - Female
Gainesville, Florida, USA
July 16, 2004
Chrysalis turned dark last night and developed gold spots this morning. Adult emerged very suddenly and took about three hours to expand its wings before flying to a nearby tree. I did not see the very bright iridescence of the male, so I believe "It's a girl"!

Great followthrough
Thanks for keeping us posted. Congrats!

congratulations!, emergence video
Great job. I actually witnessed two emergences of this species three years ago and got several slides plus video. I need to scan the slides (among hundreds of others). They give off this really strange red fluid, which I understand is from the GI tract (meconium). The emergence always happens really fast--just 30 seconds or so. I did not notice the silver spots on the chrysalises before emergence.

I have a Quicktime video of the emergence, linked from this page.

Broken link
Hi Patrick,

It seems that the hyperlink is broken.
I got: "Not Found -- The requested URL was not found on this server."

Is there a way to fix it ?

Sorry--not available now
Oh, sorry, that has been removed from that site. If I can find the original file, I will post it to Flickr. That may not happen right away, however.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Patrick.
Let us know if you were able to find it.
