Stiletto Fly - Ozodiceromyia argentata

Stiletto Fly - Ozodiceromyia argentata
Kennebunk, Maine, USA
July 14, 2004
9-10mm long; ID by BugEric: Stiletto fly, fam Therevidae, Thereva sp

Stiletto fly
This is a stiletto fly in the family Therevidae (Threvidae?). First one I have seen on a flower. I usually find them around aphid colonies lapping up honeydew.

Update
V J Hickey received the following via email, which he forwarded to me. Hopefully the sender won't mind me posting it here.

I am a scientist working on asiloid flies. I saw your picture on BugGuide.Net of the stiletto fly. Nice job. Eric Eaton is correct. It is a stiletto fly (Therevidae), but it is not in the genus Thereva. Your picture is of a female in the genus Ozodiceromyia, probably the species Ozodiceromyia notata (Wiedemann, 1821). Keep taking those wonderful pictures and let me know if you need any more flies identified.
Best regards,
Dr. Mark A. Metz

Ozodiceromyia argentata
Although this species is very closely related to O. notata, it is actually Ozodiceromyia argentata (Bellardi). There is a subtle difference in the female frons that is clear on this photo.
