subfamilies?

Do we utilize subfamilies in Collembola on BugGuide? There doesn't seem to be a Dicyrtominae page.

It appears that we do not.

Just to be sure, I clicked through the Collemobola taxonomy... Not a subfamily to be found.

Dicyrtominae

given the downwards 'pointing' anogenital segment.
In Ptenothricinae the anogenital segment points backwards.
So it is NOT Ptenothrix marmorata.

But it does not match any known Dicyrtoma or Dicyrtomina.
Possibly a new undescribed Dicyrtominae...?

I do have some additional pics of marginal quality. I'll have to go back and find more. Should I take any in alcohol? Is that the preferred method for Collembola?

You can preserve

specimens in denaturated ethanol min. 90%.

Given you plan to make new pics

try to make some frontal shots. If we can see the frontal macrochaeta we can make sure whether or not it is Dicyrtominae. See collembola.org for an illustration of the taxonomic difference between Dicyrtominae and Ptenothricinae.

I glanced at your site yesterday. I'm afraid the posted face shot is the only one I got, and it is too blurry to make out the macrosetae well. The lighting was a bit challenging and many of the shots were over- and underexposed. Hopefully I can find them again since the snow melted.

The pattern looks more like the one on the left, but I don't know how variable these are.
I was going to say, I believe Frans Janssens only checks the general Collembola section, but it looks like you've been getting responses here, so never mind.

Hmm

I did get one response from Frans here, but I might move it to Collembola so it's more visible. I was just looking at those species too, and many of these seem pretty variable.
