Grasshopper - Pardalophora phoenicoptera - female

Grasshopper - Pardalophora phoenicoptera - Female
Tavares, Lake County, Florida, USA
April 26, 2006
Size: approx 1 - 1.25"
Found this today. Not a good hopper and didn't fly.
Almost stepped on him! Body color a sandy beige to blend in perfectly with the sand.
Great orange & blue color on his legs & a pale blue band on top.

Orangewinged grasshopper?
Hi,
The nymph is definitely P. phoenicoptera. I suspect that it ended up looking a lot like the brownish adult shown for comparison. Often (not always though) the nymphs are plainer looking than the adults, and the pattern becomes stronger when they mature. Also, a lot of the pattern is on the front wings (tegmena) of the adults, and so is completely missing from the nymphs. This is one of my favorite species, they are always beautiful, no matter what color.

Orangewinged grasshopper?
Hind-leg pattern and shape of pronotum sure looks like Orangewinged grasshopper, Pardalophora phoenicoptera:

but the coloration of the rest of the body is different, for example:

A color morph or race found in Florida scrub, with all that sand? Very curious.

I would agree.
The subject of this series is a nymph, hence it cannot fly. Pardalophora should be the genus, I'm not sure of the species.
