Zebra Swallowtail Caterpillar - Eurytides marcellus

Zebra Swallowtail Caterpillar - Eurytides marcellus
Tavares, Lake County, Florida, USA
April 26, 2006
Size: 3/4" approx
saw a zebra swallowtail laying eggs on this paw paw plant a few weeks ago.
At that time I also saw the green caterpillar
Came back today and found this baby black Zebra.

It sounds to us that you are saying
that these two images are not of the same individual and were not even photographed at the same time. We will unlink them since BugGuide reserves LINK for multiple images of the same individual, and add a thumbnail into the text. See what you think. You will have to fix the dates and sizes on the green image. Thanks for this comparison! Great images

Zebra Swallowtail Caterpillar
makes sense..
I went back changed the info.
Thanks!

Moved to guide
this black one is new to me. but Wagner(1) says "largely black forms do occur."

Black larvae
I was reading in "florida butterfly gardening" by Marc & Maria Minno that "young larvae are black."

Interesting
I will add more info on larval forms to the guide page. At .75" though, I don't believe this particular specimen would qualify as a "young" larva.
