Young cricket?

Young cricket?
Upper Cottonwood Creek Wildlife Area, Merced County, California, USA
March 5, 2011
Size: ~ 4 mm
I was a bit surprised to find this little orthopteran swimming around in a small mud puddle in oak savanna habitat. Is this a young field cricket? The yellow-lined shield on the back seems like it could be distinctive?

Moved
Moved from Grasshoppers, Crickets, Katydids. Thanks, David! These images can also be frassed if they can't be ID'd further. I wasn't able to collect or rear this one, unfortunately...

I think it's a hatchling Shield-back Katydid,
but I don't know which species. Genus may be possible to figure out after staring at it for a while, but I'm not even sure of that. Immatures may actually be easy to identify, but they are not well documented in literature, so there isn't much information available to draw on for inspiration. Rearing them to adulthood is perhaps the best way to identify them. These are mostly easy to rear too - they aren't picky about food usually (little insects collected from around a light will often make a good high protein food for most of them). I'm not sure how many species are found in that area, but probably at least a few.
