Eastern Tent Caterpillar - Malacosoma americanum

Eastern Tent Caterpillar - Malacosoma americanum
Charleston, South Carolina, USA
April 24, 2006

Eastern Tent Caterpillar
This one would be the Eastern Tent Caterpillar version.
The Forest version has footprints on the back.
The Eastern version has the solid white stipe with orange fuzzies like yours here.

The info page on the guide warns these guys can sting. As kids we always played with them like little fuzzie puppies - and never got stung. Obviously you didn't either!
So I wonder if the Eastern really stings?....

Sting?
That's news to me! I've been a bug person my entire life, and I've yet to experience that. :)

ETC
Yeah... this caterpillar looks quite different from the Eastern Tent Caterpillars I uploaded in the past few days, so I wasn't real sure. I noticed this one was shorter in length, thicker in size, and a bit darker in color. It threw me off for a minute.

Relocating in guide
and I'll edit your title (which said Forest Tent Caterpillar) to reflect the actual ID.
