Snowberry Clearwing Moth - Hemaris diffinis

Snowberry Clearwing Moth - Hemaris diffinis
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
April 28, 2006
Size: 1.2 inches long
This insect was flitting around very quickly in my backyard this afternoon and it was hard to get a picture of it. It was going from flower to flower like a bee. It was fuzzy and had the coloring of a bumblebee, but antenna like a moth, and large, clear wings. The body resembled a lobster to me.

Moth
Looks like Hummingbird Moth. Both photos you submitted look exactly the same.

Yes, they were both the same
Yes, they were both the same picture. I was previewing my comments and noticed the send picture area was blank, so I filled it in again. It ended up sending the picture twice. Thanks for identifying it. I've never heard of a hummingbird moth, but that's exactly what it acted like!

We've got 3 pages of them, several species.
