Moved from Laccophilus.

Keys to L. maculosus
though size is slightly off(at the smaller end of the scale); an interesting note- there are 3 subspecies reported in North America each differing in size and elytra colour patterning. This is most likely the eastern subspecies maculosus, which is small and has darker patterning; I have a number of specimens in my collection identified as the western subspecies decipiens, which is slightly larger (~6 mm) and has paler elytral patterning.

Sorry...my bad :-(
not maculosus ( no wonder size does not fit)...antenna infuscation and lack of elytral freckling makes this L. undatus

Thanks Tim

Subfamily Laccophilinae
Genus Laccophilus; Keyed from online dytiscid key from Aquatic Inverts of Alberta- I see 5 foretarsal segments; very nice pics!

Pretty!
Nice work with the aquatic arthropods, Tom.

rich habitat
The vernal pools and swamps have a ton of different insects. You never know what surprises you haul up from the depths (a few inches deep):-)

Net
Are you using a net to collect these aquatic critters?

No net yet
I should be using a net and a bucket, I'd get a lot more stuff. I'm just using a 4oz vial to scoop things out of the water. It works ok if the water is only a couple inches deep.

Do you still have this one?
If you still have this one, save it for me. I think it is a Hydroporine, but we don't seem to have it in the collection.

Don't have
I took the picture in the field and released it. I'll look for another one.
