Annoying Bug in Our House - Halyomorpha halys

Annoying Bug in Our House - Halyomorpha halys
Atlanta, Cobb County, Georgia, USA
March 23, 2011
Size: About 3/4" long
We've seen several of these bugs inside our house in the last few days. It's about 3/4" long and can fly.

Why are they in our house? They seem to swoop down on the bed when I'm reading!!!! Then they just crawl around slowly. I don't like them. Will they bite me? How do I make them leave?

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
lucky you, you've been invaded by the BMSB. They've been spreading explosively from the Philadelphia area and now occur across the country.

They are harmless (unless you are a farmer). They hibernate inside houses, and you see them at this time of year trying to get back out. They are not a sign of inadequate housekeeping or anything. They are very difficult to eliminate but will leave for the summer. You can vacuum them if needed. They are not aggressive, just clumsy. They don't bite. They do stink if you squish them.

Thank you for your quick reply, Sara. Stink Bugs. That's so comforting to know when guests ask about them. I'll try not to squash them, though.

I tossed my "model" bug out the front door. He was very cooperative during the photo session.

Stink Bugs
I freaked out about stink bugs last year here in Maine. They stink, sort of like a sweet cut grass smell. They emit that odor when in danger (so my cat learned the hard way). But they were crawling on me at night which just didn't sit well with me. It was an infestation in a new house. They liked the leaves under the deck and it was there they were multiplying and on every screen, on every door jamb, everywhere. But the good news was that the MINUTE there was cold temperatures, they died off. They lasted all winter trying to get in the house. So pray for a cold snap.
