Beetle larva?

Beetle larva?
Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve, San Mateo County, California, USA
April 2, 2011
Size: ~ 2 cm
This large grub-type larva was found under some bark on a downed log. It had hooks on the hind end of the larva. I didn't look carefully enough for legs, but it certainly was worm-like.
