Absence of Ticks?

I can't say that I miss them, but I find it quite surprising that I haven't encountered any ticks yet this year. Typically, I will start to notice them as soon as temperatures warm sufficiently to bring out other arthropods; this year, we reached that point about six weeks ago. The Georgia piedmont experienced an unusually harsh winter with three snowfall events. I wonder whether that has anything to do with it, as I can't think of any other factors that may have changed. I've been going into some rather brushy areas with a large deer population (and no repellent.) I haven't seen any velvet mites either, although spiders are fairly abundant.

I was down in the Sand Hills State Forest of SC last week and was surprised not only by the lack of ticks, but also by the fact that I came back to WI with no chiggers. Awesome!

Plenty here ...
Not sure what is going on in Georgia, but here in NE North Carolina, we had a "harsh" (by our standards, anyway) winter as well, but it has definitely not affected the tick population. We have seen ticks here, in abundance, since late February! I can send some your way, if you would like! ;-)

Nice of you to offer...
... but you can keep 'em. :-) I realize that by writing this, I'm basically "asking for it." The next time I go out, I'll probably be swarmed by a veritable tick army.

Here in the center of Georgia
we have little tick activity (our winter really sucked, too) at the present time, but they did come out somewhat early (mid-February) for some ungodly reason. The dogs and cats kept getting them all winter when the temps hovered in the teens and twenties for weeks on end, but now seem to be quite free of them since things started to really warm up. Go figure.
