Beetle? - Dermestes lardarius

Beetle? - Dermestes lardarius
Shoreham, Suffolk County, New York, USA
April 6, 2011
Size: about 1 cm
I've found several of these little critters all over my house - in the kitchen, in the bathroom, on random walls and on the rugs. They are very sluggish and tend to just sit there. They are black with a white or brownish band and are about a millimeter long. My home is located in a development which is surrounded by woods and the dirt the area is mostly clay if that helps. I first started seeing them this winter. It was very cold and very snowy. I saw them again today it had rained both yesterday and this evening.

A quick glance
at recorded sizes shows body lengths between five and eight millimeters for this species, so yours was likely closer to one centimeter than one millimeter. Did you mean to say centimeter?

A quick glance
Sorry, yes I did mean 1 centimeter...I'm used to inches and as bugs goes this little things are scary looking at all. Thank you so much for you help, by the way. I'll definitely clean my pantry this weekend.

OK,
I've changed the size field to 1cm.
