dark crambid - Penestola bufalis

dark crambid - Penestola bufalis
Everglades City, Collier County, Florida, USA
April 4, 2006
Size: wing about 8 mm
reminds me of a Herpetogramma species similar to the aeglealis photos at MPG but with an extra tooth in the PM line near the costa, and some gray shading on the wingtips

found on the same night and not far from another individual that's darker but has the same markings as this one, so I'm guessing they're the same species

Thanks, Bob

Sometimes Moths Can Be Difficult....
.... I sent this to Brian Scholtens and he says "[This moth] I’m not certain of, but it is closest to Ostrinia nubilalis, but not Herpetogramma." I didn't send Brian the wing length. Jim Vargo's spread specimen of O. nubilalis has a wingspan of 27mm. I doubt this moth can be that species.

.... at least it looks like it to me. The lines can look a bit crinkled and more toothy depending on how the wing is held, less toothy in a fully spread and flat specimen. I didn't get a really good photo in Florida, but they sure do seem dark compared to other related species.
