Goat horned fly, long

Goat horned fly, long
Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Headquarters area, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
February 13, 2011
Size: under 10mm?
This fly had it's head shoved in a crack, wiggling around like it was catching something, and spingtails live on these posts.
Then it pulled it's head out of the crack and took off before I could get a head shot or other views.

Moved from Flies. Probably Mycetophilidae. These are not predatory as adults as far as I know.

any idea
Why when I find these they've always got their head stuck in a crack?

I've been photographing Globular and Elongated springtails on these posts all winter, so assumed they might be a food source.

Mine don't do that
Mine don't do that. Maybe it's after the same fungus or microscopic stuff the springtails are eating.
