Meadowhawk
Judging by the shine on the wings it's a fairly fresh individual. Sympetrum corruptum looks like this and has yellow stripes on the legs. Sympetrum madidum is not dissimilar but has all black legs. See an example here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/482928/bgimage
A look at the stripes on the side of the thorax and you would have been able to tell which it was.

Sympetrum corruptum?
Thanks for the fast response. I have added another image which shows more of the side.
Based on its location, an friend of mine said they think it is most likely
Sympetrum corruptum
.

Sympetrum
I think I'm seeing (imagining?) a bit of yellow on the side of the thorax in the second shot and legs do appear to be striped so S. corruptum would be my suggestion. What about the location suggests that species?

S. coruptum
My friend has seen and identified
S. corruptum
in a similar habitat not far from this location. Based on that and my photo, that is how he id'd it.

location
Although I agree this is likely S. corruptum, just because he saw S. corruptum in a nearby location, it doesn't mean that S. madidum doesn't occur there, too.
